Protect Pipes In Attic From Freeze
Here's a water pipe freeze prevention tip to share with your friends and family.
Crack open your attic door if it's inside your home's hallway, closet or accessible from a bedroom upstairs. Allow the heat from your home to get into your attic just enough to raise the temperature a few degrees.
I see a lot of copper water lines inside attics in Youngsville, Lafayette, Broussard and across Acadiana that are uninsulated and susceptible to freezing. Plumbing services aren’t usually necessary during a light freeze for a few hours because the pipes are blocked from the wind. And PEX water pipes are more resistant to freezing and bursting compared to copper or PVC pipes because PEX pipe is designed to expand slightly to accommodate frozen water, which significantly reduces the risk of bursting.
But for hard freezes lasting more than a full day where temps get below the low 20s and especially into the teens, do everything you can to protect ALL of your water pipes, even the pipes in your attic, not just the one's outside.
So, besides letting both hot and cold water trickle through a single faucet to keep pipes from freezing, also open your inside attic door to allow heat from your home to enter the attic and help keep pipes from freezing.
