Leaking Second Floor Tub In Lafayette Causes Ceiling Damage

A customer in Lafayette recently had a water leak show on their ceiling. The leak was directly under a second story bathtub.

As a master plumber with 17 years of plumbing experience I knew immediately what the likely cause of the leak was after looking at the tub. 99% of the time the water leak comes from the tub drain where the strainer meets the drain pipe under the tub. Typically, the plumbers putty between the strainer and the tub wears out over the decades of use. A water leak repair solved the problem.

I took the strainer out, cleaned the old dried out putty away from the tub and strainer, installed new, fresh putty, and reinstalled the strainer. I tested the drain with water and no more leaks. The connection should last another 40-50 years.
